Peru: Internet Cafes Under Watch for Minors Viewing Porn

LIMA, Peru — The mayors of Pueblo Libre and Villa El Salvador, two districts of Lima, are putting Internet cafes under watch so minors are not permitted access to pornography.

Rafael Santos, mayor of Pueblo Libre, said that the 70 Internet cafes in his district are under "virtual" watch and all pornographic material is supposed to be blocked.

Villa El Salvador Mayor Jaime Zea said that 350 Internet cafes are periodically inspected to make sure that minors don't have access to pornography and that minors won't be trapped by child pornography rings.

In Peru, users access the Internet at kiosks and cafes rather than pay high fees for home connections. A one-hour Internet connection at a kiosk costs $1.20-$1.75.

Internet cafe owners are required to have programs that block and filter inappropriate material, and face fines and possible closure if regulations aren't followed. Internet cafes are constantly visited and checked by local authorities to make sure minors are not viewing inappropriate material.
